Description
Get a First-Hand Look at Interprofessional Education with MBKU!
Step into the world of Interprofessional Education as a standardized (simulated) patient (SP). MBKU’s Super Sim IPE activity involves approximately 200 students from the OD, PA, and PharmD programs. Students from various health professional programs will collaborate in small groups to demonstrate their knowledge, clinical skills, and behaviors that are consistent with the core competencies for interprofessional collaboration. Each group will have 60 minutes to work through a standardized patient encounter, followed by a 20-minute debriefing session.
Student Goal
Work collaboratively to evaluate the patient (including history, physical exam, labs/tests/imaging) and develop a comprehensive management plan.
Responsibilities for Standardized Patients
Days prior to the simulation
- Familiarize yourself with the SP script
- Act like a patient for PA, Pharmacy, and Optometry students
- Provide feedback about your experience
Upcoming Dates And Times
Questions & Answers
- Where do I park? What are my duties the day of?
Arrival + Parking
Complementary parking is available in the visitor parking lot (see map). You will be greeted in the visitor parking lot and escorted to the check-in.
Preparing for the Activity After You Arrive
Once you are checked in, you will be escorted to your assigned room. A faculty facilitator will brief you and let you know if you need to change into a gown, take off your shoes, etc., depending on what exam you are assigned.
During the Simulation Activity
- Use your own first name. Your last name for the simulation is Smith.
- Answer students’ questions based on the information provided in the SIM script. If students ask for something that is not in the SIM script, simply say “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember.” Your faculty facilitators can also step in as your “family” and provide information as appropriate.
- Allow students to perform an eye exam as well as a physical exam. This may require you to temporarily expose certain non-private parts of your body (I.e., allow students to listen to your heart/lung underneath the gown & remove socks for a foot exam).
- Participate during the debriefing session with faculty and students and provide your feedback.
After the Simulation Activity
- The faculty facilitator will ask you to rate your experience based on a rubric. Please provide your honest feedback. The feedback is used to help the student teams improve, but it does not impact their grade for the activity.
- Check in with the course coordinators before you leave. They can be found at the HPB student lounge (where you checked in). Thank you so much for volunteering your time!

Students will listen to heart and lung sounds with their stethoscopes. They will check pulses at two sites (neck and arm), assess for edema/swelling (shin, ankle, and top of foot), and assess capillary refill time (fingers). Standardized patients will need to wear a gown for this exam (provided).
Eye Exam
Students will take entering visual acuities (script provided) and will examine both eyes by shining a light into them.
Diabetes Foot Exam
Students will check for pulses in two locations in the feet and will check for capillary refill time (toes). Students will also use a small filament to apply pressure to various parts of the foot to assess pressure sensation. They will use a tuning fork to assess for sensation of vibration on the bottom of the feet.
- What should I wear?
On Top
We recommend a short-sleeve t-shirt or a tank top so your arm is easily accessible for blood pressure measurement. You’re welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket that can be easily removed.
On Bottom
Shorts, or pants such as jeans, joggers, leggings, or sweatpants that can be easily rolled up to the knees. Please, no skirts.
Shoes and Socks
You will be asked to remove your socks and shoes. Otherwise, foot attire is up to you.
For Certain Exams
You will be asked to wear a gown. You will keep your bottoms on but remove your shirt. Restrooms will be available to change before and after the sessions
- Do I need to memorize the script?
No. We’ll provide you with the script ahead of time so you can familiarize yourself with the information; however, we will also provide a printed version on the day of the Super Sim. You are welcome to reference the script as often as needed during the exam.

Nothing! You can bring a refillable water bottle if desired; however, we will provide bottled water.
